Postpartum Moms and Newborns
Postpartum home care is an important part of the birthing cycle. Postpartum home visits can significantly reduce re-admission to the hospital for newborns. A 2004 study from Pennsylvania State University’s Medical Center found that 0.6% of newborns who received postpartum medical visits had to be re-admitted to the hospital within the first 10 days after discharge, while the rate among newborns who did not receive postpartum visits was 2.8%—more than 4.5 times higher.
In fact, in some countries, postpartum home visits are mandated by law. In the UK, for example, postpartum home visits by nurses or midwives are required by the National Health Service.
